Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health disorder that triggers repeated obsessive thoughts or emotions (obsessions) or the desire to do something (compulsions) over and over.

OCD is impacting people of all generations and walks of life, and it arises when a person is captured in a process of obsessions and compulsions. Unwanted, distracting thoughts, pictures, or urges are obsessions that cause extremely distressing emotions.

OCD is not about activities like biting your nails or negative thinking. That could be a compulsive habit of washing your hands several times after touching something that might be dirty. Though you may not want to worry about this thing or do something, you feel powerless to avoid it.

Types of OCD 

OCD occurs in several ways, although most cases fall into at least one of four types in general:


  • Cleaning and Contamination
  • Forbidden thoughts  
  • Symmetry and Ordering
  • Hoarding
The recent edition of the Diagnostic and Predictive Manual of Mental Illnesses (DSM-5) also defines these subgroups of symptoms. Mental healthcare professionals should refer to them as aspects of symptoms rather than subtypes of OCD.

In OCD, you have compulsions or impulses that annoy you and trigger distress. You may try to ignore them, or drive them out of your mind, but that is complicated or impossible in general. And if you avoid for a moment thinking concerning them, they usually keep coming again. 

If you are diagnosed with OCD, you may experience a number of different symptoms. Your symptoms can mainly come from one group or more.

Cleaning and Contamination


This category of symptoms may involve such as constant preoccupation with germs or disease, thoughts regarding feeling unclean or disgusting, persistent concerns over blood exposure, hazardous substances, pathogens or other causes of infection and washing or cleaning of contaminated products compulsions. 

Forbidden thoughts 

Symptoms may include regular repetitive feelings, often of a sexual or aggressive type, guilt, embarrassment, and other anxiety over your thinking, Continuous interrogation about your sexual identity, preferences or ambitions, looking to reassure you're not a bad guy and mental activities to remove your thoughts or to terminate them.

Symmetry and Ordering

Such symptoms may include: a requirement to align-items or belongings in some way, the severe need of items for symmetry, or structure, magical thinking or wanting to believe anything bad will happen if you don't arrange things correctly or coordinate them, rituals of an organization or special means of aligning items. 

Hoarding

Symptoms of this category also include: persistent concern that throwing away things might harm you or someone else, and a requirement to gather a variety of things to prevent yourself and someone from damage, extreme concern of an important or necessary item can be thrown away by mistake and an urge to search your possessions or to review them.
